Decision guide / AEO versus SEO
Answer Engine Optimization vs SEO: what an AI Visibility Audit actually checks.
AEO does not replace SEO. SEO makes a site eligible to be discovered and useful in search; AEO applies those same foundations to questions where a system may synthesize a direct answer. Start with indexability, evidence and user-task coverage—not promises of citations or a special AI schema.
QEO decision matrix
What stays the same, what changes, and what remains outside anyone’s control.
This comparison is a methodology tool, not a claim that every platform evaluates or reports visibility the same way.
What an audit can check
An audit can verify conditions and priorities. It cannot guarantee an answer-surface outcome.
Google’s public guidance for AI features still centers on helpful, crawlable content and foundational Search practices. QEO-Labs uses that baseline before treating an answer-surface observation as meaningful.
Google sources: AI optimization guide and AI features guidance.
- Technical eligibilityCan the pages be crawled, indexed, rendered and canonically understood before more content is produced?
- Question and evidence coverageDoes each priority page answer a real user task with sources, limits and useful decision criteria?
- Entity and trust clarityCan a reader identify the organization, reviewer, methodology and boundaries behind consequential claims?
- Measurement designCan the team distinguish a visible observation from an attributable qualified visit or audit request?
When to invest
Use an AEO workstream when the team can name a decision, evidence and measurement baseline.
It is useful when a crypto, fintech or SaaS team already has an offer and needs to identify technical, content and trust gaps before scaling pages or acquisition. It is not a shortcut for a new site with no clear audience, sources or conversion path.
- Good fitA real category question, an active site, a defined audience and evidence the team can review.
- Not yetNo indexable foundation, no clear user task, or no way to distinguish a qualified request from an anecdotal mention.
- What is not promisedRankings, traffic, AI Overview inclusion, citations, brand mentions or platform-specific outcomes.
- Review ownerA. Corven reviews methodology and evidence standards before final findings are presented.
Start with the foundations, then decide whether an audit is the next useful step.
Read the methodology for the process, use the checklist to prepare the inputs, or request a private audit when the decision surface is clear.
